Vehicular Equipment Components

Note-The term "vehicular" as delimited for group 25, is applicable to those vehicles and tractors included in groups 23 and 24, construction vehicles included in group 38, and warehouse trucks, tractors, and trailers included in group 39. It does not apply to railway vehicles (group 22), aircraft (group 15), or watercraft (group 19). An item of supply which is a "vehicular" component, within the scope delimited above, is classified in this group regardless of whether it has additional applications on vehicles outside the delimitations for this group.

SHIELD,DUST,TRACK IDLER ROLLER

An item designed as a protective covering for the track idler roller of a track-laying vehicle. Its purpose is to keep dirt, dust and other foreign substances from contacting the bearing surface of the roller, shaft and bearing.

SPROCKET WHEEL

A toothed wheel whose teeth or sprockets are designed to be engaged with the links of a pitch chain, track, or the like. It is usually used for transmitting power.

BRAKE,DUAL DISK

A brake consisting essentially of the following: a. A single piece or divided cylinder housing designed to be mounted on the torque flange of an axle. The cylinder housing has a slot or groove through which the DISK, BRAKE passes. It contains a piston(s) or push rod(s) which provides the hydraulic or mechanical force to press the LINING, FRICTION against the DISK, BRAKE. b. LINING, FRICTION. c. Two DISK, BRAKE designed to be keyed or rigidly attached to a wheel or rotating shaft.

BRAKE,SINGLE DISK

A brake consisting essentially of the following: a. A single piece or divided cylinder housing designed to be mounted on the torque flange of an axle. The cylinder housing has a slot or groove through which the DISK, BRAKE passes. It contains a piston(s) or push rod(s) which provides the hydraulic or mechanical force to press the LINING, FRICTION against the DISK, BRAKE. b. LINING, FRICTION. c. A DISK, BRAKE designed to be keyed or rigidly attached to a wheel or rotating shaft.

BRAKE,EXPANDER TUBE

A brake consisting essentially of the following: a. A frame designed to fit over and be attached to the torque flange of the axle, and having provisions for housing an expander tube and brake blocks. b. An expander tube which is a flat rubber tube designed to be filled with brake fluid and thereby force brake blocks against the brake drum. c. Brake blocks which may be cemented to the expander tube or fitted into the frame above the expander tube.

BRAKE,MULTIPLE DISK

A brake consisting essentially of the following: a. A brake anchor bracket, also called a carrier assembly, which is the basic unit of the brake. It is designed to be attached to the torque flange of the axle and is also the part upon which the other components of the brake are assembled. b. A floating hydraulically actuated annular piston, or an equivalent mechanical device, used for applying braking pressure. c. Metallic disks keyed to rotate with the wheel alternated with nonrotating disks keyed to the anchor bracket. See also BRAKE, SEGMENTED ROTOR.

BRAKE,SEGMENTED ROTOR

A brake consisting essentially of the following: a. A brake anchor bracket, also called a carrier assembly, which is the basic unit of the brake. It is designed to be attached to the torque flange of the axle and is also the part upon which the other components of the brake are assembled. b. A floating hydraulically actuated annular piston, or an equivalent mechanical device, used for applying braking pressure. c. Segments of brake lining attached to the nonrotating disks.

BRAKE,SHOE TYPE

A brake consisting essentially of the following: a. A torque spider which is a disklike metal part designed to fit over and be attached to the torque flange of the axle. b. One or more brake shoes with brake lining attached. c. A hydraulic cylinder(s) or mechanical linkage to provide the force by which the brake shoe is pressed against the brake drum.

ADJUSTER,SLACK,BRAKE

A device used in an air or vacuum brake system of a vehicle to eliminate the looseness in the linkage when brake lining-wear occurs.

LINK,WHEEL CYLINDER,HYDRAULIC BRAKE

A metal device designed to be mounted between the wheel cylinder piston and brake shoe. Its function is to transmit the motion of the piston to the brake shoe.

DIAPHRAGM,CHAMBER,BRAKE

An item of flexible, nonmetallic construction, designed to convert air pressure or vacuum into mechanical force when installed in a brake chamber.

GOVERNOR ASSEMBLY,AIR BRAKE

An automatic device designed to maintain pressure within a predetermined range in the reservoir tank of an air brake system.

LINK,ANCHOR,BRAKE SHOE

A one piece metal item, usually flat and of rectangular cross section, so designed to maintain alignment of the brake shoes.

STEERING WHEEL

A spoked wheel specifically designed to be attached to the top of a steering column, by means of which the steering gear is operated.

DUMMY COUPLING,AUTOMOTIVE AIR BRAKE HOSE

A device designed to protect a disconnected air brake hose coupling from dirt or other foreign matter. It may also serve as a bracket to support a hose coupling.

DEFLECTOR,DIRT AND LIQUID

An item so shaped as to deflect one or more of the following: dust, dirt, grease, oil, or liquid into a desired direction or away from a particular area. Can be attached to a stationary or with a revolving part.May or may notbe a mechanical device.

CAMSHAFT,ACTUATING,BRAKE SHOE

An item with an integral shaft designed to convert rotary motion into linear motion for the purpose of energizing the shoes of a vehicular brake system.

ARM,STEERING GEAR

The portion of a steering mechanism that connects the sector shaft to the tie rod(s) or drag link.

TORQUE ROD,TANDEM AXLE

A metal device designed to insure correct spacing and alignment of truck and trailer axles.

CYLINDER,HYDRAULIC BRAKE,WHEEL

A cylinder designed to house the piston and other necessary component parts of a CYLINDER ASSEMBLY, HYDRAULIC BRAKE, WHEEL.

CYLINDER ASSEMBLY,HYDRAULIC BRAKE,WHEEL

A device consisting of a CYLINDER, HYDRAULIC BRAKE, WHEEL with a piston(s) and other component parts which is mounted to the back plate of a wheel. It uses the flow and pressure of a fluid to create the linear motion required to operate the brake shoes of a hydraulic brake system.

CHAMBER,AIR BRAKE

A mechanical device employing a flexible dished diaphragm to convert air pressure into physical force to actuate the brake shoes of a vehicle. See also ACTUATOR, SAFETY; ACTUATOR, SPRING BRAKE; and ROTOCHAMBER.

CHAMBER,VACUUM BRAKE

A mechanical device employing a flexible diaphragm to convert vacuum to physical force to actuate the brake shoes of a vehicle.

CYLINDER,HYDRAULIC BRAKE,MASTER

A cylinder, usually incorporating an integral reservoir, designed to house the necessary component parts of a CYLINDER ASSEMBLY, HYDRAULIC BRAKE, MASTER.

RING,LOCK,AUTOMOTIVE WHEEL

A one-piece metal device designed to fit a matching groove in the outer edge of a wheel or wheel rim for holding the side ring in position. It may be split.

RING,SIDE,AUTOMOTIVE WHEEL

A one-piece metal device designed to fit the outer circumference of a wheel or wheel rim. It is held in position by a locking ring or has self-locking features for positioning and retaining a pneumatic tire. It may also be split and/or held by bolts and studs.

RING,SIDE AND LOCK,AUTOMOTIVE WHEEL

A two-piece metal device consisting of a side ring and matching lock ring, usually loosely rivited together, which is designed to fit the outer circumference of a wheel rim for positioning and retaining a pneumatic tire.

CYLINDER ASSEMBLY,HYDRAULIC BRAKE,MASTER

A device consisting of a reservoir and/or CYLINDER, HYDRAULIC BRAKE, MASTER with other components necessary to displace fluid from a central source for actuating the slave or wheel cylinders of a hydraulic brake system.

BRAKE DRUM

A circular shaped metal item designed to be connected to a machine or vehicle shaft or wheel and used to retard, stop or prevent motion by the application of pressure exerted by brake(s) or band(s).

BEADLOCK,PNEUMATIC TIRE

A circular metal device designed to fit between the beads of a tire to hold and position the tire when rim flanges are tightened.

CUP,HYDRAULIC BRAKE CYLINDER

A circular-shaped item of molded synthetic or natural rubber designed specifically to seal fluid pressure and prevent leakage within the cylinders of a vehicular hydraulic brake system. It is a component of CYLINDER ASSEMBLY, HYDRAULIC BRAKE, MASTER or CYLINDER ASSEMBLY, HYDRAULIC BRAKE, WHEEL. Excludes CUP, COMPRESSION.

PLATE,WEAR,BRAKE SHOE

A rigid replaceable metal item, designed to be mounted on the actuating or cam end of a brake shoe to receive the thrust of the operating cam.

LINING,FRICTION

A fibrous and/or metallic material with or without binders and/or compounds, cut or molded to a specific size. It may be a segment or a complete lining. It is usually designed to be fastened to a shoe, disk, band, cone, or the like, but may be installed without fastening. It provides a friction surface for transmitting, retarding, or stopping motion. Excludes LINING MATERIAL, FRICTION.

WEIGHT,WHEEL BALANCING

A metal item designed to dynamically and statically balance the pneumatic tired wheels of a vehicle. The weight is usually attached to the rim by means of an integral spring steel clip.

BUSHING,SLEEVE

A tubular shaped unthreaded item with or without a flange at one end designed to be inserted into a hole to reduce the inside diameter of the hole and to protect the surrounding body structure from damage resulting from stress, strain, and/or vibration. The overall length must exceed 25 percent of the outside diameter or the shortest distance between peripheral flats of the body. Includes items which are divided into two or more segments which includes 180 degrees (3.141 radians) or less of the bearing periphery. For items made of rubber, see BUSHING, NONMETALLIC. BRAKE LINING KIT

A collection of items consisting of brake linings of specific size(s) together with rivets and/or bolts for fastening the lining to the original brake shoes. Excludes brake shoe kits containing the assembled brake shoes complete with linings, and also brake lining packaged in sheets or rolls.

A metal device designed to provide a swiveling connection between a tie rod and arm of an automotive steering mechanism.

A circular metal item designed to mount on a WHEEL, PNEUMATIC TIRE to support and retain the tire. It may be of one piece or it may include a RING, LOCK, AUTOMOTIVE WHEEL; RING, SIDE, AUTOMOTIVE WHEEL; or RING, SIDE AND LOCK, AUTOMOTIVE WHEEL. For items with provisions for mounting on a separate hub capable of turning on a central axis, see WHEEL (as modified).

WHEEL,PNEUMATIC TIRE

A wheel with an integral or removable rim designed to mount a pneumatic tire. Includes wheels without rims but designed to accommodate pneumatic tire rims. May include tire(s). Excludes WHEEL, LANDING GEAR.

WHEEL,METAL TIRE

A wheel designed with an integral or removable metal tire. Excludes WHEEL, RAILWAY.

WHEEL,SOLID RUBBER TIRE

A wheel with an integral or removable rim having or designed to mount a solid rubber tire.

RING,ALIGNING,DUAL TIRE RIMS

A circular metal item, one piece or sectional, designed to be placed between the tire rims of a dual tire wheel to space and maintain alignment of the rims.

LINING MATERIAL,FRICTION

A fibrous and/or metallic material with or without binders and/or compounds woven or molded into roll or sheet form of uniform width and thickness and may be fabricated with or without cork inserts. It is intended as the bulk material from which LINING, FRICTION may be fabricated for use on disks, shoes, or bands to provide a friction surface for transmitting, retarding, or stopping motion.

TRACK SHOE SET,VEHICULAR

A set of replacement shoes for a tracked vehicle with attachment parts such as bolts, nuts, washers, plates, and the like. Excludes links with integral or attached shoes.

PLUG,ADJUSTING,BALL STUD

A headless, externally threaded item usually slotted in one end to facilitate turning and to accommodate a locking device. The opposite end may be flat, concave or drilled to mate with a tension spring, bearing, ball or ball seat. It is designed to adjust tension and secure in position the ball stud of a steering tie rod end, drag link end and/or other connectors of this type.

AXLE,VEHICULAR,NONDRIVING

An item designed for connecting the opposite wheels and supporting the weight of a vehicle without provisions for driving the wheels. It may have pivoting wheel spindles for steering. Excludes AXLE, RAILWAY and WHEEL SET, RAILWAY.

PUSH ROD,HYDRAULIC BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER

An item in the form of a rod with one end designed to mate with the socket of a PISTON, HYDRAULIC BRAKE, MASTER CYLINDER, the other end designed to connect with various forms of rod connectors.

DRAG LINK,STEERING

An item designed to form a connection and to transmit linear motion, either directly or indirectly, between the steering gear arm and the steering knuckle arms of a vehicle. See also TIE ROD, STEERING.

TIE ROD,STEERING

An item designed to form a connection or link, either direct or indirectly between the steering knuckle arms. It is used to maintain alignment of the wheels and to facilitate steering of the vehicle. See also DRAG LINK, STEERING.

SEAT,BALL SOCKET

A rigid item, usually circular in shape, having a concave or bevel bearing surface on one end. It is designed to mate with and provide a wear surface for the ball of a ball stud, control rod, arm, or the like. The other end is usually flat, flanged, or offset and is usually designed to mate with a flat surface or spring. Includes metal items having a plastic ball socket insert. See also WASHER, CONCAVE.

STEERING GEAR

An item designed to transmit motion from the steering wheel to the steering linkage. It may include the steering wheel, steering arm and/or an integral air or hydraulic assist mechanism. It is used on power boats and motor vehicles. See also STEERER, MECHANICAL, HAND OPERATED. Excludes STEERING GEAR, ELECTROHYDRAULIC, MARINE.

ACCUMULATOR,HYDRAULIC

An accumulator in which liquids are stored under pressure for momentary energy in a hydraulic system. Excludes ACCUMULATOR, HYDRAULIC, SQUIB ACTUATED.

ACCUMULATOR,PNEUMATIC

An accumulator in which gases are stored under pressure for momentary energy in a pneumatic system.

PARTS KIT,AIR-HYDRAULIC BRAKE SLAVE CYLINDER

A parts kit for an air-hydraulic brake slave cylinder.

TRACK SHOE,VEHICULAR

A replacement shoe for a tracked vehicle, which may include attaching parts, such as pin(s), guide(s), link(s), and the like. Excludes links with integral or attached shoes.

PLATE,BACKING,BRAKE

A rigid circular shaped metal item with a centrally located aperture. It has mounting holes and is specifically designed to mount and position the components of a BRAKE (as modified). It also serves to prevent dirt and other foreign matter from entering the braking mechanism. Excludes items which are used as a dust shield only.

DETENT PLATE

A metallic item usually flat, having toothlike projections on the periphery, specifically designed to engage a PAWL for the purpose of regulating and/or locking a brake, clutch lever, or the like, in a definite position.

ROD,ALIGNING,VEHICULAR AXLE

A rigid metallic item, of various cross-sectional shapes, designed to maintain proper alignment of axle assemblies with the frame, in a vehicle suspension system. It may be fixed and/or adjustable at one or both ends. It may have bearing(s) and/or bushing(s) at one or both ends and may be threaded at one or both ends to provide accommodations for a knuckle(s) link assemblies or the like.

ARM,PIVOTING WHEEL SPINDLE

A component part of a pivoting wheel spindle, one end attaches to the spindle, the other end by means of either a ball stud or pin attaches to the TIE ROD, STEERING. See also ARM, STEERING GEAR.

CAP,GREASE

A cap, usually of metal, designed to retain lubricant and excludes foreign matter from bearings. It is normally used as an end closure on items designed to rotate on a shaft,such as a wheel hub, or fit into a housing at the end of a rotating shaft, or the like. Do not use if a more specific name applies. For items mounted by bolt holes, see COVER, ACCESS.

ADAPTER,BRAKE DRUM

A rigid circular shaped metal item, with a centrally located aperture. It is specifically designed to mount or secure a brake drum to a wheel hub. It is a component of a brake drum. Excludes PLATE, BACKING, BRAKE.

PARTS KIT,PISTON ASSEMBLY,COMPRESSOR

A parts kit used for replacing the worn and/or damaged parts used in a compressor piston assembly. It may include such items as a connecting rod, piston pin, bearing(s), cotter pin(s), retainer(s), washer(s), and the like.

CYLINDER,HYDRAULIC ACCUMULATOR

A cylinder designed to house a piston and other necessary component parts of a hydraulic accumulator.

BLADDER,ACCUMULATOR,HYDRAULIC

An item fabricated from a flexible material, to be used in conjunction with an ACCUMULATOR, HYDRAULIC for the purpose of alleviating line shock and to equalize and maintain a predetermined pressure. It may include an integrally molded valve.

LINING SET,FRICTION

Two or more friction linings grouped together for a clutch, brake, or the like. For items whose component parts do not have the same basic name, see PARTS KIT (as modified). See also BRAKE LINING KIT.

BRAKE SHOE

A metal item in the shape of an arc, with or without a replaceable friction lining on the surface of the shoe arc. When actuated by a cam, lever and/or hydraulic cylinder, it exerts pressure on a drum or wheel. Also, see BRAKE, SHOE TYPE.

CYLINDER ASSEMBLY,ACTUATING,LINEAR

A cylinder containing a piston and other component parts designed to develop linear motion required to operate a given object(s) with energy generated from either pneumatic or hydraulic pressure(s). See also CYLINDER, ACTUATING, LINEAR. Do not use if a more specific name applies.

PARTS KIT,HORN BUTTON SWITCH

A parts kit used on the switch assembly of a HORN, FLUID OPERATED&#59; or a HORN, ELECTRICAL.

FILTER,FLUID

A filter having inlet and outlet connections and designed to be connected in a pipe, tube or hose line. For spin-on, base-mounted filtering devices with integral outer casings, see FILTER ELEMENT, FLUID. Excludes AIR CONDITIONER.

RING,BEVEL,AUTOMOTIVE WHEEL

A ring shaped item of metal or rubber, designed to be inserted between the tire rim bed and tire base. It is designed to equalize a sloping tire rim bed.

BRAKE BAND AND LINING

A circular shaped flexible steel device, having a replaceable friction lining, designed to contract upon the outer surface or expand against the inner surface of a drum to retard or stop motion.

DISK BRAKE SHOE

A replaceable metal plate, usually affixed with a fabric friction lining as the contact pad surface. It may be of circular, kidney, or rectangular shape. When mounted in a caliper cylinder housing, between brake disk and hydraulic or pneumatic piston(s), or wheel and caliper lever, it is so designed that actuated pressure, on the shoe friction pad, will retard or stop motion. Excludes BRAKE, DUAL DISK; BRAKE, SINGLE DISK; BRAKE SHOE; and DISK, BRAKE.

DISK BRAKE SHOE SET

A group of replacement components consisting of two or more DISK BRAKE SHOE, usually affixed with a fabric friction lining as the contact pad surface. They may be of circular, kidney, or rectangular shape. They are so designed that, when mounted in a caliper cylinder housing, actuated pressure on the shoe friction pad will retard or stop motion. Excludes: BRAKE, DUAL DISK; BRAKE, SINGLE DISK.

PARTS KIT,AIR FILTER

A collection of items used to repair/replace air filters. May include mounting hardware. Excludes PARTS KIT (1),BRAKE CHAMBER.

SUPPORT,STEERING COLUMN

A structural device of various shapes, cast, forged or fabricated, may mount on steering column by bolts and/or clamps to proper position. Bears stress imposed by the steering column.

DRAG LINK-TIE ROD

An item designed to form a connection or link either direct or indirectly between the steering gear arm and the knuckle arms of a vehicle. It is used to transmit linear motion, to maintain alignment of the wheels, and to facilitate steering of the vehicle.

LINK,TRACK SHOE,CONNECTING

An item of various cross sectional shapes which may be of solid or hollow construction. It is designed for the purpose of connecting two or more track shoes.

PARTS KIT,RELAY VALVE,AIR PRESSURE

EVAPORATOR,AIR BRAKE SYSTEM

A device designed to contain methyl alcohol to provide protection against air system freeze up by inducing alcohol vapors into the intake air. May have a direct connection to the compressor, or a porous wick extending into the air stream. It may also include retaining rings, evaporator tubes, evaporation control rods, mounting devices and the like.

SHIELD,BRAKE DISK

An item designed as a protective covering for a DISK, BRAKE and is used exclusively on wheeled vehicles. Its purpose is to protect the braking surfaces of the disk brakes from dirt, dust, and other foreign substances.

HOUSING,STEERING COLUMN

A part designed to surround or enclose a shaft, in addition to aligning moving parts of a steering column assembly. It may provide mounting facilities for external and/or internal components.

PISTON,HYDRAULIC BRAKE

A metallic or nonmetallic item designed to function in a wheel cylinder or caliper of a hydraulic brake system.

ARM,CONTROL,VEHICULAR SUSPENSION

A rigid device designed to hold the coil springs and provide fluctuation in the suspension system. May include shaft and/or bushing and upper or lower application.

VALVE,RELAY,AIR PRESSURE

A valve specifically designed for installation in an air brake system. It is used on trailers, long wheel base vehicles, as well as multiple rear axle vehicles. It serves to speed and synchronize the application and release of air operated service or parking brakes. It may include emergency features for trailer application.

VALVE,BRAKE,PROPORTIONING AND WARNING

A device designed to combine a warning light switch with a proportioning valve in a hydraulic brake system. The warning switch activates the dashboard brake light in the event of pressure loss failure. The proportioning valve reduces hydraulic pressure to the rear brakes to prevent rear wheel lockup during heavy brake application.

A frame mounted diaphragm or piston type chamber(s), consisting of components such as a control valve, check valve, push rod and the like. May include electric motor. MASTER CYLINDER POWER UNIT

A device consisting of a brake booster, master cylinder, push rod and the like. May include electric motor. Is actuated by a combination of mechanical and/or electric, vacuum, air and hydraulics. SPIDER,BRAKE

A metallic cast circular device, designed to transfer torque load directly into the housing, reliability of the brake and permitting unrestricted air circulation for maximum cooling. It also reduces brake fade and extends lining life for heavy duty air brake system. Excludes PLATE, BACKING, BRAKE.

A device designed to support the curb side of the linkage and maintain center link movement in a horizontal plane. Item is attached to the frame and connected to one end of the center link. May have integral brackets. Excludes ARM, STEERING GEAR.

An item designed to transmit the motion of the steering wheel to the linkage system. It usually has a splined hole at the steering gear end and either a tapered hole or a stud-and-socket connection at the other end. It connects the steering gear to the center link.

EQUALIZER,AIR BRAKE

An item designed to be mounted in the service air lines and work in combination with brake chambers and quick release valves. Designed to absorb and store energy and redistribute as required to balance braking automatically and eliminate single wheel lockup. May include items such as base diaphragm, piston, o-rings, shock or memory absorber, quick release valve unit andmounting accessories.

PISTON,VALVE

A cylindrical item of various configurations which reciprocates in a valve body, assisting in the movement of the disk to open or close a valve. May include additional components such as ring(s), collar(s), spring(s) and the like. Excludes DISK, VALVE.

CALIPER ASSEMBLY,DISC BRAKE

A U-shaped device with a floating, sliding or fixed mounting design. A device by which force is applied by mechanical, hydraulic, vacuum, or pneumatic actuation to slow or bring to a stop, a rotating rotor disc. It may contain any number of associated parts, such as pistons which may be offset or opposed to each other, caliper housings, bolts, support springs, bushings, sleeves, shields, bleed screws, dust boot, shoe retainers and the like. May also include brake-pads with assembled linings. Excludes rotor discs.

CALIPER,DISC BRAKE

A U-shaped device designed to house associated parts such as pistons, support springs, bushings, sleeves, shields, bleed screw, dust boot, shoe retainers, brake pads/linings, and the like. Excludes any repair parts or components.

An item designed to be used on a steering wheel which actuates the sound of a HORN (as modified). By pressing down on the item, it operates the sound of the HORN (as modified) and turns it off when pressure is released. A rod or strut used in a two-leading-shoe type brake assembly. Designed to transmit through the medium of bellcranks, the force applied by the expander unit resulting in a leading shoe action on the second shoe which would otherwise have a trailing shoe action.

A rigid metal item of optional shape which is part of a TENSION DEVICE, TRACK, VEHICULAR and which absorbs and releases the pressure of the spring.

CONTROL UNIT,PNEUMATIC TIRE

A device designed to be installed into the air pressure system or transmission of a vehicle. It controls the deflation or inflation of the tires while a vehicle is moving to adjust to the terrain over which it it travelling.

A rigid, replaceable metal item, designed for assembly with a component to resist wear caused by direct thrust exerted by an associated part. The bearing surface must have a specified surface finish designation of 16 micro-inches centreline average (arithmetical average) or less.

A metal item which is the activating portion of a brake assembly expander. May include a shaft, push rod, draw link or the like.

TAPPET,BRAKE SHOE

A metallic item which is part of a shoe-type brake expander or adjuster assembly. Designed to transmit the motion imparted by the expander or adjuster cone to the brake shoe.

CONTROL,POWER STEERING SYSTEM

A control which determines the mode of operation of a power steering system and which may be connected to a sensor.

ADAPTER,CALIPER,DISC BRAKE

An item designed to position and align the caliper and brake shoes of a disc brake for movement fore and aft.

ADJUSTER,RATCHET,BRAKE BAND

An automatic tooth-like device used in a brake system of a track vehicle to eliminate the looseness in the linkage between the pedal assembly and brake band assembly.

A device irregular in shape with holes for the purpose of attachment to a brake band assembly.

DIAPHRAGM,MASTER CYLINDER,HYDRAULIC BRAKE

A component of a wedge type spring brake designed to maintain alignment and position of the wedge assembly.

IDLER ASSEMBLY,TRACK ROLLER

A metallic configuration of various shapes consisting of several components which function as a unit to guide the track in and out of the track rollers while intermittently supporting the weight of the machine and providing control of tension and slack in the track.

LEVER,AUTOMATIC ADJUSTER,BRAKE

A rigid item usually in the form of an arm specifically designed to allow proper actuation of the ADJUSTING SCREW ASSEMBLY, BRAKE; it is attached to the brake shoe by means of a spring adjuster.

LEVER,BRAKE CLUTCH

A device used to actuate the brake band to retard or stop motion in a clutch brake system of a track vehicle.

LEVER SHAFT ASSEMBLY,VEHICULAR STEERING GEAR

An internal component assembly of a steering gear consisting of a shaft and lever. The lever is designed to mount a bearing unit whose stud sits in the worm of the tube and worm assembly.

LINK ASSEMBLY,TRACK

An item consisting of one MASTER LINK, TRACK SHOE, CONNECTING; and a series of LINK, TRACK SHOE, CONNECTING forming a continuous chain loop. When connected by a master pin and bushing, it provides a support rail for the machine and a means for attaching TRACK SHOE, VEHICULAR. It also transmits the driving force from the track bushing to the TRACK SHOE, VEHICULAR.

PISTON,AIR BRAKE CHAMBER

A disk shaped item with an integral push rod activated by air pressure in a CHAMBER, AIR BRAKE housing to assist in service braking.

An item specifically designed to act as a rest for an operating lever to facilitate removing the brake drum.

A metallic bar notched on each end situated close to the wheel cylinder, which operates in conjunction with a lever to push the shoes apart.

A unit formed by welding together an assembly of pieces; including hinge(s), plate(s), beam(s), and other components of an axle assembly.

A device designed to combine a warning lightswitch with a metering valve in a hydraulic brake system. The warning switch activates the dashboard brake light in the event of pressure loss failure. The metering valve prevents excessive front disc braking until the shoes of the rear drum brake contact the drum.

A device designed to combine a warning light switch with a metering and proportioning valve in a hyrraulic brake system. The proportioning valve reduces hydraulic pressure to the rear brakes to prevent rear wheel lockup during heavy brake application.

A flat circular metallic item, a component of a disk type brake used primarily for frictional purposes.

A cylindrical-shaped nut, internally and externally threaded, with a flanged cone or ball seat and a square wrenching head. The internal threads are used to secure the inner wheel and the external threads receive the outer wheel securing nut.

The slat armor generally encircles the entire vehicle perimeter; the roof and wheels may or may not be protected. Kits may be attached to the vehicle using blast plates and mounting brackets included in the kit.

A fabricated removable textile, leather, or plastic cover specifically designed to fully or partially inclose an ammunition rack for protection from damaging elements such as moisture, dust, and the like. COVER,WINCH

A removable cover of various materials, designed to fully or partially inclose a winch for protection from damaging elements such as moisture and dust and for operational safety. An assembly usually having one or more adjustable legs with wheels, shoe skids, pads or the like at their ends for a base. DASHPOT

A device usually consisting of a piston and cylinder with means of securing one or both ends. It is used for cushioning or clamping a movement to avoid shock, absorb vibration,or for time delay, by the restricted passage of fluid (gas or liquid) through an orifice or around the piston.

SPACER,PLATE

A flat metal or plastic item of various peripheral shapes having a solid (not laminated) cross-section. It is designed to maintain a predetermined distance between two surfaces. For round items without a hole having a solid rectangular cross-section use DISK, SOLID, PLAIN. For round or hexagonal items with only one hole centrally located and with the length (thickness) exceeding 25 percent of the outside diameter or distance across peripheral flats, see SPACER, SLEEVE. The thickness between the two parallel bearing surfaces must be 0.006 inch, (0.152 mm) or more for items less than 1/4 inch (6.35 mm) across the peripheral diameter, or smallest overall outside dimension, or must be 0.016 inch (0.406 mm) or more for items 1/4 inch (6.35 mm) or greater across the peripheral diameter or smallest overall outside dimension. BLADE,MINE CLEARING

Consists of two independently, mechanically operated moldboards with scarifier teeth (tines) supported by skid shoes. Each blade is designed to be mounted on the front of a full-tracked, combat tank with the sole purpose of clearing antitank mines from within the track path. The bottom section of each moldboard has scarifier teeth welded permanently in place. The scarifier teeth dig into the ground and act as the cutting edge for the blade. The teeth cast the mines up into the moldboards which in turn throws them aside and away from the tank's track.

A device made of metal designed to be attached to a door at one end and a door post on the other end. When the arm is extended it holds the door open.

A rigid item, usually circular in shape, having a concave or bevel bearing surface on one end. A device used in manual automotive transmissions, designed to equalize the speed of the mating parts before they engage. Common types such as block type, disk and plate type, plain type or pin type use friction to synchronize the mating parts. the main function is to help in engaging gears by synchronizing the speeds of the gear and the shaft before the connection is made.

A variable speed drive consisting of one or more hydraulic motors and speed reducing gear assemblies integrally mounted and designed to convert hydraulic energy into output shaft torque.

An arrangement of gears in an epicyclic train that connects two shafts in the same line. The driving force is equally divided between the shafts which rotate in different directions with one shaft permitted to revolve faster than the other.
